Condiments

Condiments such as mayonnaise and ketchup are staples in many American restaurants and diners, although Antar admits she doesn't like condiments and doesn’t even have them in her house. These pieces are simply "the artist as observer" of American culture.

What food is America known for?

American sculptor Robin Antar has been called “Brooklyn’s answer to Andy Warhol.” Her mission is to create a visual record of modern American culture through commonplace objects as she explores the question, “What is America?”

Meticulously carved in stone, a hamburger with fries, an American-made work boot, denim jeans and a giant "Ballpark Frank" become lasting monuments to contemporary life. The series looks at America's past, present and future. Some of the logos, for example, are the older "classic" versions.

This piece was carved after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

"I was thinking, what is America, what could I carve in stone that would represent this event that forever changed America? I wanted the piece to transcend the obvious symbols of the Twin Towers or the American flag. To me, America is comfort food and fun, so M&M's became the perfect representation for America in this sculpture."
